Ngano: Storytelling in the Shona tradition.
Since before thoughts, dreams and anguish were written down, the va Shona people of Zimbabwe told stories called ‘Ngano’. Their world was recorded in colourful detail within the words and songs of these ngano. It is with this tradition in mind that our brand NGANO DESIGN AFRICA seeks to create fashion that amplifies the story we still tell and live within today. Moving away from using only words to expression via visuals, the mantra of story, craft, magic made with an African soul begins.
Daughters of the Soil: The Preamble
The history of Sub-Saharan Africa has been a fascinating one, and particularly for us at Ngano Gold we took a look at the aesthetics of women during the high-spirited period of liberation struggles in the late 60s to 70s. This preamble to the collection opens the door to the exploration of what a liberated woman of African experience dresses like to express her identity and agency as a Daughter of the Soil.
